More and more people are moving away from traditional cable TV and satellite TV subscriptions in search of something more affordable. And who can blame them, with the average cable bill now over $100 per month! It’s now fairly easy to watch live TV online without cable, but to stream local channels without cable can be a bit more tricky. Tricky, but not impossible – keep reading to learn how to stream local TV channels online.
While national channels – like ESPN, FX, TNT, etc – broadcast all over the US, local networks focus on specific regional areas. FOX, CBS, NBC and ABC are examples. Streaming local channels like these is possible, but availability tends to vary from location to location. There are separate local networks for each of these overall networks, which leads to a maze of literally hundreds of networks nationwide. This is what complicates the process of being able to stream local channels online – but fear not, we’ll show you how to watch local channels without cable in the guide below.

Watch Many Local Channels Without Cable TV via YouTube TV
The new service offers broad coverage of ABC, FOX, CBS and NBC
YouTube TV is another solid option for those wondering how to stream local channels. The service runs $40 per month, and does not require a contract. YouTube TV is not yet available nationwide, but it’s covered in most major markets.
One unique thing about YouTube TV is that they’ve actually been waiting to launch in new markets until they’ve secured the rights to broadcast local channels in that market. In other words, if the service itself is available in your area, it definitely can give you local channels. That said, there are still areas of the country where the service is not yet available.
Local Channels Galore
YouTube TV offers the second-best coverage of local networks. It’s still well behind Hulu in total (total of 600+ vs. 400+ markets for YouTube TV), but it’s a great option none-the-less. Here’s details on how this service can help you watch local channels without cable TV:
- For FOX streaming, YouTube TV offers live coverage in over 90 US markets.
- For NBC streaming, YouTube TV offers live coverage in over 90 US markets.
- For ABC streaming, YouTube TV offers live coverage in over 90 US markets.
- For CBS streaming, YouTube TV offers live coverage in over 90 US markets.
- In addition, YouTube TV offers MyTV in 26 US markets
- Costs $40/mo with no contract. 50+ channels in total
One thing you’ll notice with this service is that if it carries one local network in your area, it probably carries all of the local channels in that area. This is different than most alternatives.
Our YouTube TV review has the full scoop on this new service; you can also kick things off with a free 7-day trial.

Watch Local Channels Online with PlayStation Vue
If you’re wondering how to get local channels online, PlayStation Vue is another option. This service can be used to stream local channels without cable. It works just like the services we’ve already discussed, allowing you to watch live TV over the internet on many of your favorite devices. PlayStation Vue works on PS3/PS4 consoles, streaming players like Apple TV and Roku, and mobile devices.
Great CBS Coverage; So-So FOX, NBC and ABC Coverage
PlayStation Vue’s basic package will run you $45 per month, making it one of the most expensive starting packages. Key offerings include ESPN, Cartoon Network, TNT, TBS, Bravo and more. In many areas, local channels including NBC, FOX, ABC and CBS are also offered. Here’s where Vue can be useful for streaming local channels:
- For FOX streaming, PlayStation Vue offers live coverage in 60+ US markets.
- For NBC streaming, PlayStation Vue offers live coverage in 40+ US markets.
- For ABC streaming, PlayStation Vue offers live coverage in 30+ US markets.
- For CBS streaming, PlayStation Vue offers live coverage in 100+ US markets.
- In addition, Vue offers MyTV in 13 US markets.
- Costs $45/mo with no contract. 45+ channels
So, PlayStation Vue (review here) can certainly be a solution if you’re looking to stream local channels. It does offer good coverage of CBS streaming, while the other channels have more coverage elsewhere.
PS Vue now offers a free 5-day trial for new members!
City Slickers Can Stream Local Channels (FOX and ABC Only) with Sling TV
Sling’s affordable, $25/mo package offers limited coverage of FOX and NBC
With an online streaming service known as Sling TV, subscribers gain access to 40+ channels for only $25 per month, with no contract required. The service works over the internet, allowing you to watch live TV on your favorite devices – from PCs and Macs to mobile phones, tablets, and streaming devices like Apple TV, Roku etc. And if you don’t have a compatible device to use, Sling TV will give you a discounted or even free streaming device if you prepay for a few months of service! How’s that for a deal? The service also offers a free 7-day trial.
Very Limited Coverage of Local Channels
Sling TV is a great service, but local channel coverage is definitely not its strong suite. The service offers very limited coverage of NBC (11 markets) and FOX (17 markets), with zero coverage of CBS and ABC.
Sling TV offers a package called Sling Blue, which comes with over 40 channels for $25 per month. Some key channels include TNT, AMC, CNN, TBS, and many more. In this same package, local networks like FOX, and NBC are included, but only in select markets.
- For FOX streaming, Sling TV offers live coverage in 17 US markets.
- For NBC streaming, Sling TV offers live coverage in 11 US markets.
- CBS is not covered
- ABC is not covered
- Costs $25/mo for 40+ channels. No contract
So, as you can see, there are different channels available in different areas. Sling TV (review here) is also rapidly expanding, so expect to see new markets added on a regular basis. Also, it’s important to understand that 95% of channels on Sling TV are available nationwide. It’s just ABC, NBC and FOX that are only available in select cities – everything else is nationwide.
Sling TV offers a free 7-day trial for new customers, which is a great way to watch local channels online while you explore the service.
Stream CBS Online with CBS All Access (only CBS)
CBS fans, I have good news: this is the easiest local channel to watch online. That’s because CBS offers its own in-house streaming service, called CBS All Access. The service is available nationwide, but only the on-demand version of it. For CBS live streaming, the majority of US markets are covered, but it’s not quite nationwide yet.
Perfect for CBS Fans
CBS All Access (review here) provides on-demand access to over 8,500 episodes of hit CBS shows and programming. In addition, in most US markets, CBS live streaming is also offered. There are too many markets to list here, but you can confirm channel availability on CBS All Access’ website. The service costs $5.99 per month, or $9.99 per month for a commercial-free package.
- ONLY CBS, but it’s quite affordable
- Live stream CBS programming and sports in most areas
- Enjoy a huge on-demand library of CBS content
- NOT a complete cable replacement, as it only covers CBS
- Just $6/mo – and no contract
So, if you’re after CBS programming, this is the way to go. It’s affordable, easy to use, works on most devices, and is available in the majority of the US. The downside is that it’s only CBS, but it’s still a good option to stream local channels – so long as your favorite local channel is CBS!
A Digital Antenna Provides Another Option for Some
Depending on where you live, you may be able to use a digital antenna to stream local channels. This doesn’t require cable or a subscription to any service, but you will have to buy an antenna. The downside to this approach is that signal can be spotty, and in many areas you won’t pick up all the channels you want.
How Can I Stream Local Channels Online?
So, we get it, that was a ton of information to take in. Unfortunately, there is no simple and definite answer to how to watch local channels without cable, simply because different channels are available in different markets. These services are also expanding rapidly, so new markets are added on a regular basis – making it easier for more and more people to be able to watch local TV online.
The good news is that each service discussed in this guide offers a free trial. That means that you can try out any of these services, see how you like them, and confirm which local channels you get – for free. Follow the appropriate links below to learn more and sign up.

If your TV diet includes major broadcast networks, cutting cable can be a challenge. Live streams from ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox stations are only available in a small number of markets, so without solid reception from an antenna, potential cord cutters are stuck.
But that might change in the coming months. TV networks and streaming bundlers are finally finding ways to get local stations on board with streaming bundles such as Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and DirecTV Now. Once that happens, dropping cable will get a lot easier.
The affiliate issue
In the United States, the big four TV networks don’t own most of the local stations that broadcast their content. They’re not allowed to due to FCC rules aimed at maintaining competition and diversity among media companies. (The FCC has been going back and forth over the percentage of homes that a single company can reach, but that’s a whole other story.)
In lieu of owning their own stations nationwide, the networks work with affiliate stations in each market to air network programming. Affiliates, in turn, negotiate with TV providers such as Comcast and Dish Network to carry local signals. The law actually requires TV providers to carry local channels if broadcasters desire, and the agency says both parties must negotiate toward this goal in good faith.
But that’s not how it works in streaming video. According to the broadcast trade publication TVNewsCheck, networks have simply been negotiating blanket carriage deals with services like DirecTV Now and PlayStation Vue, and telling affiliates they can either opt in or opt out. Local broadcasters had been skittish about those arrangements, worrying that they’re not getting the best rates and wanting more access to viewing data and ad inventory.
As a result, local broadcasts have been slow to arrive on streaming TV bundles. YouTube TV, which includes all four major broadcast networks, is only available in five markets. DirecTV Now has about 40 markets with local broadcasts, but not every channel is available in each and CBS isn’t part of the package at all. Sling TV’s situation is similar, with local ABC, Fox, and NBC broadcasts scattered across about 50 markets. PlayStation Vue’s broadcast coverage includes mostly network-owned stations, though it has more than 50 percent coverage of local CBS stations.
Live Local Tv Streaming Services
Note that DirecTV Now, PlayStation Vue, and Sling TV still offer on-demand programming from major TV networks. But without live, local broadcasts, they can’t show sports games, local news, major live events such as the Oscars, and prime-time programming as it airs.
Signs of change
Fortunately for consumers, networks and their affiliates are starting to resolve their differences. This week, ABC announced that its Clearinghouse initiative, which lets local affiliates opt into streaming deals, now has 160 of its 200 stations on board. As Variety reports, the arrangement covers live streaming on DirecTV Now, PlayStation Vue, YouTube TV, and CenturyLink, with more deals to come.
What about other networks? Last month, NBC announced progress with a similar initiative, striking a deal with the board that represents its independent affiliates. Variety reports that CBS and Fox are believed to be pursuing similar plans. (In the meantime, CBS’s $6-per-month All Access service offers a live stream in nearly all of its markets.) This doesn’t mean streaming services will be getting nationwide local coverage overnight, but it does suggest real progress in one of the biggest sticking points for streaming bundles.
That progress may not be entirely without downsides. Broadcast retransmission fees are a lucrative revenue stream for TV networks and affiliates, and a big driver of rising cable TV bills, so streaming bundles could see similar price increases over time. PlayStation Vue is a great example, charging $10 per month more in markets where it carries a majority of live local stations. That brings the base price up to $40 per month—$5 more than the starting price of YouTube TV and DirecTV Now—even if you’d rather get those same local channels for free with an antenna.
But keep in mind that broadcast networks are among the most popular channels on TV, and not everyone has the ability or desire to set up an antenna to get them. For these users, cutting cable TV could soon become a viable option for lower prices and better service.

Local Channels
Most services offer local ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC channels. The “Sling Orange” $25 plan doesn’t include any local channels.
Local Availability
Even if a service offers live local channels, it may not offer the channels in your area. If you live in an area without live local channels, you still can still access the on demand content after it airs.
To see the local channels available in your area, we suggest that you enter your Zip Code in our Local Channel Finder.
Missing Channels
If you subscribe to a plan that doesn’t offer CBS, consider subscribing to CBS All Access $5.99. It’s a monthly subscription directly from CBS, which includes live streaming and on demand access for many of its shows.
You can get free access to CW shows with The CW apps with no subscription needed.
Top Cable Channels
PlayStation Vue “Access” $45 is the most comprehensive plan for the price, but is missing Viacom-owned channels like Comedy Central, MTV, & Nickelodeon — which are only available on fuboTV, Philo, DIRECTV NOW, and Sling TV. If you want to add your Local RSN and additional sports channels like NFL Network, you can upgrade to their “Core” Plan (+$5).
fuboTV ($55) has 28 Top Cable Channels, more than any other service, but is missing ABC & ESPN — which are on all services except Philo and Sling TV “Blue”.
Both Hulu Live TV ($45) and YouTube TV each offer 25-26 Top Cable Channels. With Hulu Live TV you get A&E, History, & Lifetime, while YouTube TV includes AMC, WE tv. Neither service offers channels from Viacom.
Since DIRECTV NOW launched their new MAX and PLUS plan, they now have the weakest overall channel lineup, with just 23 of the Top 35 Cable Channels.
The two best value offerings are Philo ($20) with 18 Top Cable Channels or Sling TV’s “Blue” plan, which includes 24 Top Cable Channels for just $25 a month.
Sports Channels
Sports fans tend to have different needs; some want national sports channels like ESPN and TNT, but others want regional sports networks like YES Network, Fox Sports Detroit, or NBC Sports Bay Area.
We recommend the PlayStation Vue “Core” $50 plan for sports fans. Unless you need NHL Network, it includes all the national sports channels, pro league channels, and college sports networks. You can also add NFL RedZone to PlayStation Vue for $10/month.
Most services have regional sports networks (RSNs) from NBC and Fox in many markets.
National Sports Channels
Most services include ESPN/ESPN2, NBCSN, FS1/FS2, TBS, and TNT in their basic packages.
Regional Sports Networks (RSNs)
fuboTV, Hulu Live TV, Sling TV “Blue”, and YouTube TV offer regional sports networks (RSNs) in their base plans. DIRECTV NOW and PlayStation Vue require an upgrade plan to access RSNs.
For the most part, RSNs are restricted to those from NBC Sports and Fox Sports. Some services like fuboTV, offer MSG/MSG+ (New York) and NESN (Boston).
Pro Sports
Most services don’t offer pro sports networks in their base plan.
If you’re purely an NFL fan, Sling TV offers NFL Network as part of their “Sling Blue” $25 plan. You can add the Sling’s “Sports Extra” $10 package, which includes NBA TV, NFL RedZone, and NHL Network.
If you don’t need ESPN, then “Sling Blue” with “Sports Extra” might be the cheapest combo $35 for NFL and NHL fans.
College Sports
The major college sports networks are Big Ten Network, CBS Sports Network, ESPNU, Pac-12 Network, and SEC Network.
Hulu Live TV ($45) and YouTube TV ($50) are strong options for college sports fans. Both services include Big Ten Network, CBS Sports Network, ESPNU, and SEC Network. These four channels are also available on DIRECTV NOW, but only on their upgraded MAX plan ($70). The PlayStation Vue “Core” $50 plan offers Big Ten Network, ESPNU, and SEC Network.
fuboTV and Sling TV are the only providers of Pac-12 Network. It’s included in fuboTV base Plan ($55) or as part of Sling TV’s “Sports Extra” $5/$10 pack.
Other Sports Channels
Free Live Tv On Computer
While fuboTV‘s doesn’t have ESPN, it’s the ideal streaming service for soccer fans. It includes beIN in its base $55 plan. You can add Fox Soccer Plus for only $6, which is usually a $15 upgrade on other services.
Premium Channels
Most of the streaming services offer premium channels like Cinemax, HBO, Showtime, and Starz as add-ons to your subscription.
PlayStation Vue include both HBO and Showtime ($26) as part of their $80 Elite Plan, meaning that if you were going to subscribe to them anyway, you would get the rest of the bundle for just $54.
DIRECTV NOW includes HBO in their PLUS plan and adds Cinemax in their MAX plan, which might be cheaper than what HBO offers directly with HBO NOW ($15).
YouTube TV is also the cheapest option for Showtime at $7/month. Although Hulu Live TV, PlayStation Vue, and Sling TV offer Showtime for $10–$11 a month, you could subscribe to Showtime on Amazon for only $9/month.
